Andros Trophy: Prost secures third title

Alain Prost (Dacia Lodgy) takes win in last round of 2011/2012 Andros Trophy presented in Super Besse, and clinches his third title.

Before the last round of the season, Prost and Benjamin Rivière (Skoda Fabia) shared the championship lead, but Rivière had the edge since Prost still had to drop his two best results. Prost started clawing his way back by setting the best performance in the qualifying heats.

But, in Elite Sup Finale, Prost and Jacques Villeneuve’s Skoda Fabia crashed, which put both cars out of the race, which was eventually red flagged.

The organizers allowed Prost to get his car fixed for the second start, and the four time F1 world champion took win, and secured the title. Rivière finally takes fourth place of the day, and third in the championship standings, behind Jean-Philippe Dayraut.

Villeneuve took sixth position overall in the qualifying heats, but his crash with Prost dropped him down to 8th overall.

JV has done a hell of a start from third to first, then Prost insisted too much and got out of the race. The organizers redflagged the race, allowed Prost to repair (which is not allowed by the serie's rules) and put JV at the end of the pack.

JV and Skoda were disgusted and JV decided to leave at the end of the first lap after the red flag.

Prost has been booed by the spectators. But Max Mamers (Andros Trophy big boss) is ignominious about JV.

The 2011-2012 Andros Trophy season finished under controversy this past weekend, following a disappointing decision by race officials in the final race at Super-Besse.

Jacques Villeneuve qualified on the second row of the grid for the season finale, just behind Alain Prost and Evens Stievenart. The French-Canadian characteristically made a great start off the line, and slipped between the two cars ahead, pulling alongside Prost on the inside of the first corner. Despite contact from Prost’s team mate behind him, Villeneuve drove out of the corner leading Prost by a nose, however Prost did not give way and found himself stuck in the snow on the outside of the track.

Villeneuve continued, setting the fastest lap of the race he was now leading, however the red flag came out and the race was stopped. Against all expectations, Villeneuve was sent to the back of the grid for the restart, and Prost was allowed to repair his car and restart the race. Villeneuve was finally classified in eighth place, in a race in which he had every intention of winning.

Nevertheless, Team Škoda remained on top in the overall standings, to take a deserved and dominant victory in the manufacturer’s championship.
